Overview

Situated immediately south of downtown, these areas are some of the most dense and walkable residential neighborhoods in the city. The Gulch, in particular, has been heralded as a national model for eco-friendly urban design. In recognition of this commitment, the Gulch was certified as a LEED Green Neighborhood in 2009 — the first in the South to receive such a certification. Coupled with the Wedgewood/Houston (WeHo) and South Broadway (SoBro) neighborhoods, this is one of the trendiest, NYC-esque parts of Nashville.

Things to Do

The Gulch boasts one of Nashville’s liveliest shopping and restaurant scenes, with 13 retail establishments and more than 30 excellent restaurants condensed within its urban crescent. Across the tracks from the Gulch, SoBro is distinguished for its array of attractions and venues that have completely revitalized the area — including the Music City Center, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, the Schermerhorn Symphony Center and the Music City Walk of Fame.

South of SoBro and Interstate 40, WeHo is regarded as Nashville’s de facto “arts district,” due to its high concentration of art galleries, artist-run studios and multidisciplinary workshop spaces. You can get a taste of this scene on the first Saturday of every month, when the area’s establishments open their doors for the free Arts & Music crawl. If you want to get in on the art-making action, spend some time at Fort Houston. This neighborhood maker space offers both beginners and seasoned professionals a chance to try their hand at a variety of crafts, including woodworking, printmaking, photography and even beer brewing.

Real Estate

The real estate offerings in the Gulch and SoBro are characterized by chic urban lofts and shiny new high-rise apartments and condos. In the Gulch specifically, there are several new condo buildings that have sprouted up in the past several years, including ICON in the Gulch, Twelve Twelve, Rhythm and Terrazzo. In WeHo, many of the homes are historic cottages dating back to the first half of the century. As a neighborhood in the midst of a revitalization, more and more of these older cottage are being renovated, with newer infill popping up to complete the hip “old meets new” aesthetic.

Schools

Gulch and SoBro are served by Metro Nashville Public Schools’ Pearl-Cohn cluster. On the other hand, children attending public school in WeHo are largely served by the Whites Creek cluster, which includes Fall-Hamilton Elementary School, Cameron College Prep and Glencliff High School.

Life in The Gulch/WeHo/SoBro

These trendy neighborhoods continue to grow at an exhilarating rate, with no signs of slowing. While the Gulch and SoBro are currently separated by a CSX railroad hub, there are upcoming plans to build a pedestrian bridge that would connect the neighborhoods and make them even more walkable and bikeable. While WeHo is an obvious choice for creatives and art lovers, the Gulch and SoBro areas are a great choice for anyone who likes to be in the middle of the action.
