Overview

Incorporated in the 1950s, the cities of Oak Hill and Forest Hills are well-established communities of a few thousand residents each. Together, these communities are comprised of nearly 18 square miles of land — a sizeable chunk of Nashville’s south side. What sets Oak Hill and Forest Hills apart from other affluent neighborhoods on the south side is that they are zoned to be exclusively residential, with the exception of a handful of schools and churches. As an example, the new City Hall for Forest Hills was constructed along the southwest border of the municipality. This makes these two communities the perfect haven for people who enjoy peace, quiet and privacy after a long day at work. And, due to the afore mentioned zoning for these communities, most of the homes are on lots of about one acre.

Things to Do

There may be zero commercial development in Oak Hill and Forest Hills, but that doesn’t mean it’s out in the sticks. For excellent restaurants and world-class shopping, the Mall at Green Hills is just 5-10 minutes away, and all the excitement of the more urban parts of Nashville are just a short drive up Interstate 65.

In addition to its convenient distance from commercial amenities, Oak Hill also contains one of south Nashville’s most notable natural attractions — Radnor Lake State Natural Area, which boasts 1,258 acres of scenic wetland wilderness views and passive recreational activities like hiking, birdwatching and nature photography. Another way to get close to nature is to visit the Nashville Zoo at Grassmere, which is located east of Oak Hill, across from Interstate 65.

Oak Hill is also where the Tennessee Governor’s Mansion is located. While this three-story Georgian-style mansion serves as the home of the state’s governor and his family, it’s also open for tours by reservation.

Real Estate

What’s special about Oak Hill and Forest Hills are their zoning measures, which, again, place an emphasis on single-family homes distributed across large, wooded lots. You won’t find any high density developments here! The median listing prices of these two cities ranges between $700,000 to $900,000.

Schools

Oak Hill and Forest Hills are part of the Hillsboro public school cluster, which includes Percy Priest Elementary, Glendale Spanish Immersion School, West End Middle School and John T. Moore Middle School and Hillsboro High School. The area is rich with private schools, too. Within Oak Hill, there is Franklin Road Academy, Father Ryan High School and the Oak Hill School.

Life in Oak Hill/Forest Hills

The low density and exclusively residential zoning of Oak Hill and Forest Hills make these city-neighborhoods the purest ideal of a suburban bedroom community. There are no neighborhoods this close to the urban core of Nashville that are anywhere near as private or serene.
